Congratulations to our former A Level learner, April Hughes from Pontypridd, who has been awarded this year’s Worshipful Livery Company of Wales Award.

April achieved two As and a B in her Maths, Further Maths and History A Levels at Coleg y Cymoedd, and the award is a recognition of her academic efforts and excellent results.
The aim of the Worshipful Livery Company of Wales is to support and nurture Welsh talent, and this year’s award was presented to April by Senior Warden Jane Croad and Cymoedd Principal, Jonathan Morgan, at Cymoedd’s Nantgarw campus.
April is continuing her studies with a foundation degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford University thanks to Oxford’s Astrophoria Foundation Year Programme.
Oxford’s Astrophoria Foundation Year Programme is for learners with excellent academic potential who come from disadvantaged or underrepresented backgrounds. The programme prepares learners for success when they progress to their Oxford undergraduate degree.
April was inspired to apply for the programme after seeing past learners benefit from the opportunities offered by the college. Seeing them go on to succeed motivated her to follow a similar path.
Coleg y Cymoedd A-Level staff have introduced learners to widening-access schemes for top performing learners from state schools and encourage them to set high ambitions. Cymoedd’s recent accreditation of the NACE Challenge Award is reflective of the outstanding support learners receive to ensure they reach their full potential.
Reflecting on April’s achievements, Principal Jonathan Morgan said: “We’re proud of April’s achievements. Her success shows the incredible talent of our learners and the impact of the opportunities available at Coleg y Cymoedd.”
Congratulations, April!
