Wales Netball Partners with Coleg y Cymoedd for Youth World Cup Qualifiers

Coleg y Cymoedd are thrilled to announce a new partnership with Wales Netball. The collaboration will see the college become an official partner for the upcoming Netball Youth World Cup Qualifiers, where six teams will compete for a top three qualifying spot for next year’s Youth World Cup in Gibraltar.

This partnership underscores the mutual commitment to youth development and the promotion of netball on an international stage.

Coleg y Cymoedd has a distinguished record in the sport, with their Cymoedd Blacks (firsts) and Cymoedd Greens (seconds) teams having placed 1st and 2nd in the 2023/2024 Association of Colleges (AOC) Sports Wales Netball league.

Over the past year, the college has participated in international competitions three times, which included a tour to Gibraltar, a successful trip to Malta, and hosting South Africa’s prestigious Trinity House Randpark Ridge team. The team is highly esteemed as the top netball team in their league.

The college’s Female Academy, operated in partnership with the University of South Wales, provides learners aged 16 to 18 with practical and theory-based teaching and training from leading strength and conditioning experts, as well as experienced coaches. These include former Wales netball internationals Rachel Hughes, Nicola Lancaster, and Lowri Norkett-Morgan.

As an official partner, Coleg y Cymoedd will provide essential resources and support to ensure the smooth operation of the competition. This collaboration highlights the dedication of both Wales Netball and Coleg y Cymoedd to fostering talent at the grassroots level and promoting the sport within the community.

Vicki Sutton, CEO of Wales Netball, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership: “We are delighted to have such a progressive partnership with Coleg y Cymoedd. This agreement reflects our shared commitment to developing young talent and growing the sport of netball across Wales. By joining forces, we can create more opportunities for athletes to excel, both on and off the court, and ensure a bright future for netball at all levels.”

Former Welsh senior netball coach Mel Tuckwell recently had high praise for the Academy, saying: “It’s been wonderful to see the future of Welsh netball today at Coleg y Cymoedd. The Academy’s offerings and facilities here are clearly paying off. The future looks extremely promising for netball at Coleg y Cymoedd.”

The Coleg y Cymoedd Female Academy is based at the college’s newly opened Centre of Sporting Excellence in Nantgarw. This multi-million-pound sports training and teaching facility, which opened last year, is designed to enhance learners’ abilities in various sports. The centre provides state-of-the-art performance training facilities and academic teaching all on one site.

The Centre primarily serves Sports and Public Services learners, along with the college’s high-performance sports academies. Learners pursuing fitness instructor and personal training qualifications also benefit from the facilities.

Supporters are encouraged not to miss the opportunity to see Wales U21 in action next week at the Youth World Cup Qualifiers, held at Cardiff City House of Sport from 24th to 29th September.
