Foundation Degree Information Communication Technology

Foundation Degree ICT is a Level 4/5 University of South Wales franchise course. The course is a University of South Wales qualification studied at the college. You graduate with your cap and gown at the university and are awarded your foundation degree from USW.

Mode of study:
3 Days a week year 1
1 Day a week year 2 (Work Placement for other days)
Many placements have led directly to full time employment.

Classes are relaxed and informal as you are adults studying a university course. As you will technically be a USW student you follow University term dates. Meaning you start late September and finish in May. Classrooms are well equipped modern computing suites. You have access to the latest versions of industry standard software (e.g., Adobe photoshop, animate, dream weaver and the full suite of Microsoft office 365, Visual Basic and QGIS).

Entry Requirements

Route 1: A relevant level 3 qualification. BTEC Level 3 profile of Pass/Pass/Pass or DD at A Level (or equivalent). Additionally, GCSE passes at grade C or above in three subjects to include English/Welsh Language and Mathematics/Numeracy (consideration is given to individual circumstances).

Route 2: Mature learners (Over 21) with experience can be considered individually via interview.

You will be invited to attend an interview and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required.

At Coleg y Cymoedd we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your assessments. The better your grades the more options you will have and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher-level course.

Assessment is carried out by coursework activities within the units studied. These typically will involve students applying skills and knowledge taught to complete coursework objectives. For example, in Web Development you will be taught how to create a modern interactive web site, you will then be expected to create a web site based on a vocational based brief issued by a client. Some units have small in class tests such as maths and the work placement unit, in year 2, will require a specific number of hours to be completed with an employer.

Career Progression

Upon completing foundation degree ICT, you will have a level 5 University qualification and be well equipped to go straight into employment within the computing sector. Former students have gained employment with companies like British Airways, CGI and Civil Service. Learners have also gained employment with employers where they completed their work placement unit.
